This week, we witnessed Cynthia Brehm, Chairwoman of the Bexar County Republican Party, make false and outrageous claims about the circumstances surrounding the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month. County Chairs are elected by primary voters to lead their party and give voice to their beliefs and platform. By nature and virtue of their election, Republican County Chairs are the embodiment of Republican values, which makes Mrs. Brehm's comments that much more alarming. Unfortunately, she is not the only Republican County Chair in Texas to diminish or undermine the current outcry for justice from people of color, namely the Black Lives Matter movement. As reported in the Texas Tribune, Republican County Chairs from Nueces, Comal and Harris counties all made or shared similar posts and sentiments. While many Texas Republicans have called on Mrs. Brehm to resign her post as County Chair, it is impossible to make a distinction between her disgraceful comments and those made by the President on a near daily basis. Yet, Republicans in Bexar County and across Texas remain unwilling as ever to denounce the consistent hateful rhetoric coming from The White House. It is time for Republicans to finally put country before party, and be consistent in their condemnation. To my Black brothers and sisters: We see you, we hear you, we stand with you and we will fight with you. We can, we will, and we must ensure that the promise of our great democracy is available to everyone, not just the privileged few.
